Every location's local time is UTC plus or minus a fixed (or seasonally shifting) number of hours and, in some cases, minutes. When it's 12:00 UTC:

  • New York (Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5) is 7:00 AM
  • Karachi (Pakistan Standard Time, UTC+5) is 5:00 PM
  • Tokyo (Japan Standard Time, UTC+9) is 9:00 PM

Some zones use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets — India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, and Nepal Time is UTC+5:45.

UTC in Practice

Software systems, airlines, and international businesses store timestamps in UTC internally and convert to local time only for display. This avoids ambiguity during daylight-saving transitions, when a local clock can repeat or skip an hour but the underlying UTC timestamp never does.
